River King Newfoundland Club Rescue Information

River King Newfoundland Club is a non-profit regional organization recognized by the AKC-sanctioned Newfoundland Club of America to represent the best interest of the Newfoundland dog in Illinois and Missouri. The purpose of RKNC's Rescue program is to rescue unwanted or homeless Newfoundland dogs and place them in good homes. RKNC'S Rescue Committee works within the guidelines of the Newfoundland Club of America's Rescue Committee.

It is the Club's belief that Newfoundland dogs should not be acquired casually or disposed of lightly. However, it is recognized that sometimes an owner's circumstances change and the Newf is found to be unsuited to his or her present home. Newfoundland's become available from a variety of sources including current owners, breeders, humane shelters, animal control agencies, etc.

  • Decide what you want in a Newfoundland - All Newfs should be capable of water work, draft work, obedience and tracking. However, a dog sold as a pet does not belong in the show ring and should not be used for breeding.
  • Do they make good house dogs? Yes, however they also shed, drool and are messy drinkers and eaters.
  • How much do they eat? A growing puppy will eat about 4 - 6 cups of high quality dog food a day, around 50 pounds of food every 3-4 weeks.
  • Do you know how much they can weigh? Adult females can range between 100-120lbs and adult males can range from 130-150 lbs. You must not let your Newf become overweight as this can cause lifelong orthopedic problems.
  • Are Newfs good with children? Newfs are usually wonderful with children but from beginning, both the puppy and the child should be taught to respect each other's rights.
  • Do Newfs Shed? Yes, profusely at times. A Newf requires frequent brushing to remove loose hair, prevent matting and to help maintain healthy skin. This may require the assistance of a professional groomer at times which will involve some expense on your part.

A Newf is a very large commitment and will be part of your family for the next 10 years or so. Therefore, it is very important that you understand exactly what owning and caring for one means. Newfs are wonderful dogs but they do require a lot of time, dedication and Lots of Love.

The Newfoundland Rescue Network maintains a waiting list of pre-screened adoptive homes that are interested in acquiring a Newfoundland dog.

All Newfs placed by the RKNC Rescue are evaluated for temperament, vet checked, and altered prior to being placed. Adoptions are made on a match basis, the background and needs of the Newfoundland must match those of the prospective owners. An adoption fee is charged dependent upon the age of the dog. Senior dogs are usually placed at a reduced fee, younger ones are usually higher. The adoption fees do not cover all of the costs involved in operating our rescue service so donations are accepted at any time.
